Aquilegia alpina is a lovely columbine species that is native to Europe, especially the Swiss Alps. It is also a garden favorite. The deep violet-blue flowers bloom in late spring to early summer.
Aquilegia alpina is naturally compact, making it a good choice for rock gardens, the front of the border, or along the edge of a woodland path. It's very hardy, and it self sows where it is happy.
