Basil 'Dark Opal'
(Ocimum basilicum)
120 seeds $3.00 out of stock
Dark Opal basil is one of the most beautiful of all herbs. It has dark purple leaves due to its high anthocyanin content, which gives it extra nutritional value. The flavor is rich and strong. Recommended for cooking and especially for making herbal vinegar.
Dark Opal has a wonderful fragrance. I love to rub and sniff the leaves. It's one of my favorite plants for adding foliage color to container gardens.
Basil 'Dark Opal' is an heirloom herb developed at the University of Connecticut in the 1950's. It won the All-America Selections award in 1962. Also known as Basil 'Purpurascens' or 'Dark Purple Opal'. Seed-grown plants are variable with some plants having mottled or bronze-green leaves.
