Verbena bonariensis Seeds
Verbena bonariensis blooms the first year from seed. The tall, wiry stems are topped with clusters of rosy-purple flowers that attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It's a host plant for the Common Buckeye butterfly.

Verbena bonariensis is very vigorous and may be considered invasive in warm zones. Also known as Purple Top Vervain.

Verbena bonariensis Seeds

Verbena bonariensis is a hardy perennial in zones 7-10, grown as a self-sowing annual in colder regions. It is drought tolerant and deer resistant.

Sowing Verbena bonariensis Seeds

Start verbena seeds indoors in late winter. Sow on the surface, then refrigerate for 5 weeks. Full sun to part shade. Slow to germinate.

Verbena bonariensis 'Lollipop' has rosy-purple flowers that are a little lighter than the species. It is advertised as being compact, but that's only the case if you pinch it back at 4" tall to encourage branching.

Nearly every garden design book I've read mentions Verbena bonariensis. It's a terrific companion plant for roses, lilies, zinnias and ornamental grasses.
